March 2024: Bothy Gardens Renovation in Full Swing
Greetings, fellow garden enthusiasts! Since our last update in December 2023, There has been a whirlwind of activity here at Bothy Gardens, and we're thrilled to share the latest progress with you all. With planning permission secured, we immediately began restoring and rejuvenating this historic gem nestled in the heart of the English countryside.
Restoration of the Old Stone Bothy Cottage
Our primary focus has been renovating the charming old stone bothy cottage, a genuine relic dating back to the 1660s. The interior has undergone a remarkable transformation, with non-original flooring removed, the stone walls sandblasted to remove the thick white paint, and new insulation and concrete foundations installed. Soon, underfloor heating and polished concrete floors will grace the space, accentuating the timeless beauty of the Sarsen stone walls—a material reminiscent of the iconic Stonehenge.
Fun Fact about Stonehenge: Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, constructed between 3000 BC and 2000 BC. It is believed to have been built for ceremonial purposes, possibly as a burial ground or an astronomical observatory.
In our commitment to preserving the structure's authenticity, we will carefully salvage the original wood doors and repurpose them as sliding shutters. Additional enhancements include relocating and restoring interior stone walls and breathing new life into every cottage corner.
Revitalising the Garden House
Meanwhile, out in the garden, our efforts have been equally fruitful. The greenhouse received much-needed attention, with the remaining old glass removed, wood restored (including all three doors), and new concrete flooring laid. We have also finished repointing the exterior and removed three small trees from the brickwork.
Planting has commenced, and pathways and event areas are taking shape as the second-to-last layer of stone is added.
Exciting developments also include the arrival of our guard dogs and ready-to-stand sentry, lending their charm to the garden ambience. Additionally, we're thrilled to have relocated four historic water troughs, including two ancient stone troughs dating back to the original construction or even earlier—an homage to the site's rich heritage.
What's on the Horizon?
As we look ahead, the coming weeks promise even more milestones. Inside the greenhouse, we're finalising repointing efforts, brickwork repairs, and the installation of restored doors. Septic tank installation and drainage work are underway, laying the groundwork for future utility connections.
The old bothy's roof is not original; we believe the original roof collapsed in the '70s. This roof will be removed to make way for a more eco-friendly insulated roof with slate and the addition of dormers and Velux, making the loft livable. When we look at images and remaining structures around the area from that time, the original roof could have been thatched.

We have acquired the land in front of the walled garden and will plant a fruit orchard here in 2024!
Looking to the Future
Though a concrete timeline eludes us at this stage, we remain steadfast in our commitment to realizing our vision for Bothy Gardens. With each passing day, we draw closer to creating a sanctuary where the past meets the present and nature's beauty reigns supreme.
